Spooktacular Pitch #50: ACCIDENTS

Background came from this design.

Title: ACCIDENTS
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy
Word Count: 73,000 words

3 line Pitch:

After one disastrous year as a vampire, seventeen-year-old Artemis finds a way to undo what was done to her: never mind the assortment of beasties with a taste for new blood in her way and her tendency to end up on the menu. Being human again will free her from her creepy sire, maybe even stop the nightmares. She doesn't know there are worse things to lose than humanity.

First 250:

I spent the eve of my first anniversary freezing my butt off in a playground. Restlessness drove me from my room before I’d even put on pajamas. And I’d always wanted to watch frost form, though watching it form on me wasn’t in the original plan. I ignored the other infinitely more productive things I could’ve done with those hours while eleven months and twenty-nine days were becoming one year. Ignoring everything seemed like the theme of the day. I was adamant: no one would acknowledge this milestone. If they remembered at all — I wasn’t volunteering to remind them.

The sun called in a sick day, leaving dawn a sad affair. Blocked by thick-walled towers of cloud, her efforts to claw through were pathetic: dull, gray, and noiseless. As the light squeezed past, shimmering and weak, color leaked into every surface. Brightly painted playground equipment gleamed under a thin layer of ice. Night had slipped away; it seemed ridiculous that I hadn’t pulled myself together and accomplished something. I wasn’t feeling it yet, but I knew I would, and not just the sleep deprivation. Besides, wasn’t going the extra mile to ignore the day actually giving it more honor than I wanted to?

It would’ve been nice to go home, call in sick with the sun, have my mother dote on me a few hours before she left for work, and sleep the rest of the day. But I didn’t want to bring attention to myself. It wouldn’t be like me to dismiss the cloudy weather, the promise of snow.

Spooktacular Pitch #51: JENNIFER STRANGE

Background came from this design.

Title: JENNIFER STRANGE
Genre: YA Paranormal Horror
Word Count: 55,000

Pitch:

Fifteen-year-old Marcus is next in line to lead his family of Ghost Hunters, but only if he can find a powerful Medium with a unique gift to join their clan. While on assignment to help a mother find the ghost of her son, Marcus stumbles on Jennifer Strange and her unique ability to touch ghosts. Now Marcus must not only help Jennifer overcome her disbelief in the supernatural, but train her to to defeat a soul-eating wraith before it devours the lost ghost and the Blackwell family.

First 250:

If a house is the face of a home, my Grandmother’s house was an obvious mental case. Whenever I saw Mom’s photo of crumbling Blackwell Manor, it always sent bumps prickling up my neck. Now, the real version loomed in front of me. I couldn’t tell the structure apart from the surrounding woods. Trees, weeds, and briars climbed slowly with enveloping vines that clung to the brick and dark wood. The forest ate the home like a snake carefully digesting a mouse.

Soon, Blackwell Manor would be swallowed whole.

“I’m not going.”

“Be polite, Marcus,” Mom warned.

I shuddered and tucked my hands deep in my pockets. “This place gives me the creeps”

“I thought so too at your age, but give it a try. Your Grandmother wants to meet you.”

“If the old bird didn’t want to meet me for thirteen years,” I said with a snort, “she doesn’t want to meet me now.”

“Look, Grandma said she could help you. I don’t know what else to do, honey.”

I rolled my eyes. “You know this isn’t going to help anything. None of your other plans to fix this worked either. It’s done. Just accept it.”

With tight lips, Mom shook her head. She was pissed. For once, I didn’t care. I was tired of Mom always changing the subject when I asked her about her photo of Grandmother Miriam’s house. I turned and looked out the window at the sprawling red and gold hills of the surrounding North Carolina Mountains.

Late Entry: Spooktacular Pitch #52: PANDORIOUS

Background came from this design.

TITLE: Pandorious
GENRE: MG Magical Realism

Pitch:

Buddle Dee, Buddle Dee! When lonely twelve-year-old Haven Hitchcock opens an enchanted book, she releases a curse that gives her the ability to bring inanimate objects to life.

Haven’s magic rocks, but her spells spin out of control when she awakens a field of pumpkins whose mischief quickly turns to mayhem.

She’ll have to reach out to her not so horrible classmates for help, or the menacing gourds will turn everyone into pumpkinheads – forever.

250 WORDS:

Most people lived adventures. Me—I read about them.

I plopped on the window seat and opened my book. My terrier, Petro, stuck his head out from under the blanket at my feet.

An hour later, I saw a movement in my doorway and glanced up. Mom.

“Haven, can’t you find something useful to do? You’ve had your nose in a book for hours. You’ll ruin your eyes. Go outdoors and get some fresh air.”

Dang! Mom and her fresh air. I could breathe just fine in my room, thank you very much.

I lived to read. If that meant ruining my eyes, bring on the eyeglasses! She never worried about what Rodney did. My annoying little brother could do no wrong – even when he was tormenting me.

I slipped into my flip-flops, grabbed my book and headed outside. Petro followed at my heels. I gulped in a breath of fresh air. A warm breeze stirred the leaves overhead. I looked up. The sky was as blue as the ocean, except for few little black clouds creeping toward town.

I settled on a rock beneath the tree at the edge of our yard. Petro flopped against my leg. Chris walked by pushing his bike, then swerved around and rolled his bike onto the grass where I sat. I liked talking to Chris. He listened.

Petro lifted his jaws, showing teeth. The hair rose on his neck like quills on a porcupine,

She will still be playing and requesting pitches, so don't worry! She and Jordy are very excited to play and can't wait to redecorate your pitches starting this weekend!

FORMATTING:

If you've made it through to the agent round you MUST follow these instructions. Email your 3 line pitch (That's 3 sentences. No more and no less.) along with your first 250 words of your finished and polished ms (If it stops in the middle of a sentence, continue on until the end of that sentence.) from TODAY (October 17th) until Friday (October 19th) at 8am EDT to JamieCorriganContests (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject line Spooktacular Pitch: TITLE. Your entry should be formatted like this in a normal font:

Name: Jamie Corrigan
Title: SPARK
Genre: YA Dark Fantasy
Word Count: 61,000 words

3 line Pitch:

Sixteen-year-old Taisie Monahan's ghost problems explode into the real world once she discovers her ability to destroy immortality in magical beings, a power the malevolent Spark needs to regain the life he lost centuries ago. Holding her mom's soul hostage in his ghoulish realm, Spark agrees to set everyone free if Taisie wins a twisted game of hide-and-seek. Problem is, if she fails, Taisie's free will—along with her mom's soul—will be his forever and the world will not survive if Spark's allowed to return to the real world once again.

First 250:

Pressing myself against a brick wall, I tried to catch a break from the sea of students flowing through the floodgates of Saint Isabel High. I'd never seen so many name-brand clothes in one place before. I took a step forward and then quickly returned to the safety of the wall.

Get a grip. People are staring.

I tried to will myself to listen, to move away from the wall, but my fear kept me locked into place like a statue held by chains. Acting like a mess wasn't going to make my old rep of being a freak-girl go away in this school any easier.

“Hey! Come here!” My breath caught when the hot jock yelled and waved at me. Or what I wanted to be me. After all, didn't I try to make myself look like his type when I got up that morning?

My finger lightly swiped across my sorry excuse for lipstick, kicking up a slight hint of cherry from my lip balm, making me feel like a little girl in big girl clothing. My legs wanted to run away, but my brain ordered me to act like this was nothing new and walk over to him as if I'd done it a million times. No one knew the old me. The one I'd left behind. I could be different here. I just had to act the part.

I managed to plaster a huge fake smile across my face as I strolled over to him.

And now what you've all be waiting for...

Spooktacular Pitch Extravaganza Submission and Agent Game Details

Background came from this design.

Can you believe the Spooktacular Pitch Extravaganza is only five days away? Yes! It's THIS Saturday! So that means that today is the day for details. Are you ready? Are you sure? Okay, here we go!

NOTE: Formatting details along with contest email will be posted with the names of the 50 people moving on to the agent round. (I was going to post it here, but the post was crazy long. Don't worry though. It won't be something crazy like requiring you to use rainbow ink or something. But those details will come on October 17th.)

SUBMISSION DETAILS:

Submissions open on October 13th at 8am EDT through October 17th at 12am EDT for Adult, New Adult, Young Adult, and Middle Grade. (What the agents are looking for can be found on this post.) To enter you must come here to my blog and sign up on the raffelcopter widget set up on the designated submission post.

On October 17th I will draw 50 names using random.org and post them on my blog. Those 50 people will then have until October 19th at 8am EDT to email their 3 line pitch (3 sentences total. No more and no less.) and first 250 words to a designated contest email that will be posted with formatting details with this announcement. If someone doesn't get their entry in on time, I will draw a new name and they will take the empty spot. I will have the post up announcing the lucky 50 no later than 8pm EDT on the 17th.

All 50 entries moving on to the agent round will go live on my blog on October 20th and will be available for Brittany and Jordy to do a little Halloween-esq redecorating until October 28th. The 28th will be the last day for both agents to make a play.

AGENT GAME:

Halloween-esq pitch redecorating. That's right. Eggs and TP will be thrown at the pitches they want. So this time, it's good be egged and TP'd! Brittany and Jordy will have from October 20th through October 28th to make their plays. If there's a tie, they will get to make another throw until a victor emerges or someone runs out of ammo. (I love how Brenda Drake's contests do this and it always makes the agents plays a little harder in the end. But to me, that equals more fun!)

Both agents will have a total of 26 eggs (2 baker's dozen) and 24 rolls of TP (2 twelve packs) total. Not a lot, but normal kids wouldn't have tons of this stuff and it'll make their choices a little more difficult while being easy to use.

PRIZES:

So, what does all of this redecorating get you? Well, it's something I always enjoy and I hope you do too! (Oh! And there's an extra prize popping up here too from someone very awesome!)

All entries will be on moderation, so no comments are allowed while Brittany and Jordy make their plays.

Awesome, right? Wait! There's more!

And still, there's more!

Of course you knew I'd have to up it from normal submissions!

AN EXTRA SPECIAL PRIZE:

One lucky person will win a $35 gift certificate from Editor Cassandra Marshall! That lucky person will be announced with the other lucky winners on October 29th! Also, if you'd like a chance to win a full edit, head over to Cassandra's blog to enter her 2012 FREE EDIT GIVEAWAY!

So I think that's everything. If you have any questions or just want to say how excited you are, my comments are always open. Well, except for during the contest of course! See you on the 13th! Until next time, happy reading/writing everyone!

The Stars Fell Sideways Blog Tour: An Interview with the author: Cassandra Marshall

By the book here!

Yesterday Cassandra Marshall's debut YA Steampunish Fantasy novel, THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS, was released into the world. Today, I get the honor of holding an interview with Ms. Marshall. We will talk about the book and much more. So sit back and get ready for some fun!

Let's start by having you introduce yourself, shall we?
I'm Cassandra, freelance book editor, lit agent staff, YA writer, and I'm obsessed with my dog Mollie. I live near Capac, MI, a teeny-tiny town that doesn't have high-speed internet but has a lovely library that does.

Oh, cozy libraries with internet in a tiny town! That's how my hometown was for a long while. And Mollie's a cutie! You're obsession is a must with her. :)

How long did it take you to write TSFS?
I wrote it after NaNo '10. I was exhausted by that book so I wanted something new and fun and different from anything else I was working on. I wrote it quickly, spurred on by writing buddies that were loving the pages. I finished it, let it sit for a while, edited, edited edited, let it sit, edited again, and started querying widely in March 2011.

I'm so glad you got exhausted with your NaNo project because it allowed you to write such a wonderful story. And are you sure you edited? *looks and counts. 1, 2, 3, and 4* Yep! You did indeed! Hehe ;) (FYI for those who don't know, editing and revising are a huge part of the process. That's why I have to kid at Cass, because I know.)

What does Mollie pup think about being a star in your books? (I love Mollie in TSFS btw. She's one of my 3 favorite characters.)
I keep telling her she's a birdie and she just runs to the window to look out. I think she's confused. :P

Aw! So cute. It's okay, Mollie. You'll get that bird someday.

Think fast! Hawaii or Alaska? Why?
Hawaii, easily. It's so beautiful there!

And warm. Let's not forget about warm. Ha!

If you had a TARDIS for one day, what would you do with it?
I've only ever seen one episode so I'm not altogether sure what's possible to do with one...

Let's just say you'd do ALL THE THINGS with it. And for other who may not know what a TARDIS is, here is a definition.

Imagine this: TSFS is being made into a movie. Who would play Alison, Pom, Erik, and Corben? (Yes! I had to include him cause he's yummy! Haha.)
I'm not picky, I would be thrilled if there was a movie made. But my wish list cast? Molly Quinn, Emma Watson, Kay Panabaker, Dakota Fanning, Shailene Woodley, or Saoirse Ronan for any of the girls. Matthew Goode, Tom Sturridge, Ethan Peck, Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Joe Jonas, or Ben Barnes for any of the boys :) I realize that this is a pretty pale cast, but that's how I thought of the four of them them in my head. Of course other characters have a bit more spice, like Jones I imagined looking like Dayo Okeniyi, Thresh from The Hunger Games, and I can imagine quite a few of the native Atlanteans have a bit of a tan by nature too.

I def see Dakota Fanning, Emma Watson and Joe Jonas. All are great picks and I'd definitely go see that movie!

Think of your favorite line from a book that's stayed with you. What is it and where did it come from?
In the final Harry Potter book, when Harry turns the resurrection stone three times and his parents and Lupin and Sirius are there and he's about to go face Voldy-- '"Stay close to me," he said quietly.'

*tears up* Oh, that line! Yes, such a great one. J.K. just has a way with words! *fan girl*

What made you want to write a steampunkish fantasy?
I didn't start out to, it just happened that way!

Isn't that how all the great books start? ;)

Chocolate or veggies?
Veggies!

*gasps* Blasmphemy! Just kidding. Veggies are very good and good for you. I especially love carrots!

When writing, what's your favorite drink to have by your side?
Tea! I'm working through a box of orange and starfruit green tea at the moment that is HEAVENLY.

Oh, that does sound good! *holds up cup of black tea with lemon* I don't drink tea often, (yeah I do!) But when I do, I drink awesome tea. Drink awesomeness my friends.

Night or morning?
Night.

Couldn't agree more. Moving on!

What made you self publish TSFS?
So many agents were loving it, just not enough to rep it. I let it sit a few months without thinking about it and when I re-read it I cried, I loved it so much and didn't want it to just sit in a drawer anymore. So then here I am :)

*nods* I think we all know how you feel. While I still hope TSFS and you find a home with an agent, I am very happy I get to pimp out this wonderful book like a BOSS! It is as wonderful as you are my friend and I really do believe others will think so too once they read it.

How many years had you been querying TSFS before making the decision to self publish?
Just 1.5

Not bad. But in querying land, it feels like forever. I know. *hugs you and all querying writers*

If you could have a slumber party with 9 people, who would you invite?
J.K. Rowling, Jane Austen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Laurence Fox, You, My mom, MolliePup (does she count as a person?), Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, and Mary Magdalene.

*holds in fan girl squeals* I'd be honored to attend that slumber party as well as everybody else who reads this. And yes, MolliePup counts as a person. We love her so!

Does Mollie pup have anything she'd like to add to this interview?
Squirrel?

Where? Haha! Just kidding. Good answer, MolliePup!

And finally, what is your favorite excerpt in TSFS and why?
"Corben nudged me in the side as we approached the Palace and gruffly pushed me into a store. He walked up to the counter while I stood blinking at the now-dim surroundings. Sure the pants all us miners wore were thick and scratchy and binding, but that was tons better than some frilly dress lined with lace.

We were in a dress shop and I immediately felt defensive.

“I’ve finally got the chance to wear what I want to, and you pull me into a dress shop? Forget it, I’m not wearing a single stitch that’s a pastel color. It’s pants only, or I go home.”

The woman at the counter looked at me and frowned, and two girls nearby shuffled to the back of the store to peer at me over a few racks, their pink and pale yellow dresses swishing behind them. They giggled as they looked me up and down.

I got pissed. “What’s so wrong with pants, huh? My skin is covered, there are no bare ankles! Pants pants pants! It’s not a dirty word!”

The expressions of the two girls changed from amusement to pity. The lady at the counter returned with a small navy lump of cloth and Corben took it. The lady offered her hand and Corben kissed it.

All my anger dissipated. Of course Corben had admirers, of course he must have had a girlfriend. He hadn’t mentioned having one yet, but he was kinda quiet anyway. Other than hanging out with me the past few days, he had given no signs that he was interested.

And really, what did I care? I was leaving as soon as I could anyway. Best to not get involved.

Corben said goodbye to the counter woman and walked towards me and the door. He paused briefly before he left and whispered, “Pants is the word for undergarments. I believe the word you are looking for to describe the fabric on your lower appendages is trousers.”

Oh. Right. Stupid archaic language. “Yes, TROUSERS! I totally meant TROUSERS!” I called out to the shoppers before turning and hauling ass out of there."

Haha! I love that excerpt. Always makes me laugh.

I hope you all enjoyed this interview because I know I had fun doing it! Go buy THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS  today! It's a purchase I promise you will not regret!

Remember to stop back by here on October 8 for details to the Spooktacular Pitch Extravaganza! Until next time, happy reading/writing everyone!

Spooktacular Pitch Extravaganza Details

Update: Submission details can be found here.

Background came from this design.

Starting off this post with a huge shout-out to Master Yoda, Brenda Drake, for whom I've learned and borrowed fun ways to have a contest! (I always do my best to join her contest and find them super fun. So, I want mine to be like hers. Fun for all involved!) Brenda, you are the best and I hope I make you proud!

Okay, enough of the mushy stuff!

So the above picture says it all. If you've been following my twitter, you've seen me talking about a secret October project I've been working on. Well, this is it! It's grown, shrank, and reblossomed and I'm glad it did! This contest is a huge thank you to all of my blog followers, (I hit 100 followers and have been promising a contest for a bit,) and to my fellow writing friends I've met along my journey. Read the entire post and see what I've cooked up for you! *cue witchy laugh*

I can hear you now. "Details, woman! Details!" All right. All right. Settle down. Here are the details I know you're burning to know. The Spooktacular Pitch Extravaganza will open for submissions on October 13 at 8am EDT and stay open until October 16 at 12am EDT. On October 17 I will pull 50 names and have you email me your pitches to a special contest email then. So make sure you check back on October 17!

"What do we have to do?"
Great question! Polish and spit-shine your 3 line pitch (3 lines = 3 sentences. No specific word count. Just clear, concise sentences telling your story's plot. If you go over 3 lines, you'll be disqualified and someone else will take your spot) and the first 250 words of your finished and polished ms (if it ends in the middle of a sentence, feel free to go to the end of that sentence.) This contest is open to Adult, Young Adult, New Adult and Middle Grade fiction so bring it on!

"Who are we doing this for? You?"
Haha! No! This is a contest, so it should have a great prize and judges right? And here they are! It's a Corvisiero Literary Agency showdown! It's Brittany Booker vs Jordy Albert! Here are their bios.

Brittany Booker is a Jr. literary agent in training. She worked with Marisa Corvisiero in her time at the Lori Perkins Agency. She will graduate in December of 2012 with a BA in English. She is looking for novels that keep her up at night and transports her into the pages. In fiction she is looking for well-written contemporary romances, historical fiction, fantasies, YA and new adult. She is specifically interested in time travel novels. As for YA, Brittany is drawn to contemporary works; dramatic or funny romances; and urban fantasy. She's especially interested in YA that is funny and quirky. The goofier the heroine the better. She is a big sucker for happy endings. She also has a passion for books set in the south. She also has working knowledge of Japanese and Spanish.
Brittany is not looking for erotica, middle grade, memoirs or paranormal works at the moment.

VS

Jordy Albert is a Jr. Literary Agent in training. She holds a B.A. in English from Pennsylvania State University, and a M.A. from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. She has worked with Marisa Corvisiero during her time at the L. Perkins Agency for over a year. Jordy also works as a freelance editor, and of course enjoys reading in her spare time. She is a fan of the SyFy, History and Discovery Channels, enjoys studying languages (French/Japanese), and is teaching herself how to knit.
Jordy is interested in the following genres: Romance (contemporary, historical/Regency, paranormal. Erotica is okay, but it must have a strong plot and well-developed characters), MG/YA, dystopian, and horror. She enjoys quirky characters with a self-deprecating sense of humor.

Brittany and Jordy will play a fun Halloween-esq game to win your pitches. Game, prizes, and how to format your entries along with contest email to be announced on October 8 along with the rules for these two lovely ladies. Make sure you come back for that.

Well, I think that's all for now. If you have any questions or just want to talk about the contest, my comments are always open! Until next time, happy reading/writing everyone!

GUTGAA Meet and Greet Q's and A's

I'm taking part in the awesome blogfest called GUTGAA! Over the next few weeks, I'll be participating in meet and greets, pitch polishing, and so much more while meeting other wonderful querying authors such as myself! This is my first year of doing GUTGAA and I'm so excited! I can't wait to meet everyone and hope to make a few more awesome friends along the way. So now, for my A's to the GUTGAA Q's!

-About me!
I'm a southern girl and I love putting the south into my writing. I'm happily married to the love of my life and I couldn't imagine going through this journey without him! My favorite types of stories to write have a dark twist in them along with a romantic element. I'm always willing to help anybody if I can and find adding a dash of sarcasm and a sprinkle of dorkiness always makes things better.

-Where do you write?
I'm always jotting down ideas wherever they come. Even in the shower! But most of my real writing, (actually putting the ideas down on "paper") happens in the living room while snuggled on the couch.

-Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see?
An old white drop bead lamp we got from my hubby's family. It's my favorite lamp too. That's why it's beside me! :)

-Favorite time to write?
At night! I'm a night owl due to my hubby's work schedule and insomnia. Plus, the plot bunnies and my muse refuse to get working until the suns dipped below the earth and the moon is high in the sky. Well, unless it's an all weekend party. Then it's whenever I find enough silence to get things going.

-Drink of choice while writing?
Dr. Pepper or plain ice cold water. Tea and coffee are also nice during cold nights and mornings!

-When writing , do you listen to music or do you need complete silence?
Oddly, I hardly ever play just music while writing even though music is my second love. I like silence as in no talking in the room where I'm working. But the TV must always be on. If it's not, I can't write a single word. Weird.

-What was your inspiration for your latest manuscript and where did you find it?
SPARK was inspired by Mean Girls and a mixture of The Craft and The Cult. I'm drawn to those kinds of movies and wanted a book that I could read that had that feeling within its pages too.

The inspiration for my current wip came from looking at clothes on Pinterest. I kept looking at the pictures and imagining who that girl was and what she was doing.

-What's your most valuable writing tip?
It might sound cliché, but write what you love and don't follow trends. If you're writing what's trendy at the moment, it might fade by the time you're ready to query. That's why I feel you must love what you write. Because querying's tough and if you don't love your work, you'll want to give up before you've truly given the work a fair shot.

I hope you enjoyed my answers and I look forward to meeting you all!

Until next time, happy reading/writing everyone!

Cover reveal of THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS by Cassandra Marshall

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you all to the cover of a book by a wonderful author who I am very proud to know. Not only have I had the honor of reading this book, but I also get to take part in it's reveal! (Buy the book and find out the other surprises too! Trust me, they're there.) But this post isn't about those surprises. It's about Cassandra Marshall's debut novel The Stars Fell Sideways. A Young Adult Steampunk Fantasy filled with adventure, humor, and romance with steamy guys!

So here is the part you've all been waiting for! The cover reveal to THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS!

You can buy the book here!
Book Summery:
Alison Arroway takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. She has to, or she won’t get paid. Alison is a stunt double for pampered teen actress Pomegranate and when the director takes the shoot to Portugal, Alison is anything but thrilled to be rooming with Pom. But getting to hang around teen hearthrob Erik? Now that’s a plus.

Erik invites both girls on a sunset boat trip and Alison manages to have a decent time. Until the storm hits and the boat is shipwrecked on a small island, leaving Erik missing and the boat captain dead.

In the morning light, Alison and Pom find themselves on the lost island of Atlantis. Only one problem: now that the girls know the secret of the island, the Atlanteans don’t want them to leave. They're stuck with corsets, full-skirted dresses, and the strange steam-driven contraptions that are just a way of life for the islanders.

When a plot by the ruthless army Captain to take over the island and declare himself General over all emerges, an underground group promises to return the girls to the mainland if they can help stop him. They'll go through a mountain, literally, to find the Book of Blue, a book that will explain how to make ‘the stars fall sideways' in order to save the day and earn their freedom.

THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS, a YA Steampunkish fantasy, coming October 1st from MolliePup Press!

I love this cover because if you look close enough, you can see a gear around the moon. The colors draw me in and I wonder whose feet are in the sand. Is it Alison? Pom? Someone else that may be super steamy? Who knows! But isn't that exactly what a book cover's supposed to do? Make you want to pick it up to find the answers to those questions!

Now here is something extra special just for you!

The post where I talk about my hair...

Instead of writing or anything book related, this post is about my hair. A little shallow, I know. But being a creative person, I need other outlets to let my creativity flow. "Hair?" I hear you asking. Yes, hair. The thing is, I'm really excited about getting my hair cut and dyed sometime this next week. (I'm a DIY-er when it comes to hair dye and I have to say I do a pretty good job for an amateur. No unintentional weird color yet!)

So I'm sure you're asking yourself why I'm writing about this? Well, it's because I'm going to dip dye my hair and I can't decide what color I want to use. So, I'm going to show the base color and the four colors I'm thinking of using. (I'm only using one. Not all four.) The fun part is that you get to voice your opinion on which one you think I should go with and you never know, I just might do it!

So, here is the base color-       Pure Darkest Brown (Not the brand I'm using, but the color.)

And here are the colors I'm trying to decide between.

So there you have it. Let me know what you think the color is I should use in the comments and I'll let you know what I've decided in the next post. There may be even a picture included.

Until next time, happy reading/writing everyone!

So I entered another one of Leah Clifford's flash fiction contests...

As the title mentions above, I entered awesome author Leah Clifford's flash fiction contest. I am part of the fine tradition of story sharers and this one is something I'm considering making into a full novel. If you've seen my other stories I've submitted to Leah, then you know how it works. If this is your first time here, then let me explain the details. Leah posted a picture prompt and we had to write a 1,000 word or less (maybe a little more cause she's amazing like that) based on that picture. Once we were done, we emailed it in and she read them. Although I didn't win this time, (I've won before and am still over the moon that she loved my story enough to pick me!) I still had fun getting my mind off family things and being sick. So here it is and I hope you enjoy.

Perfectly Torn
by
Jamie Corrigan

Smiling faces line the top of mama's piano. I stare at them, wondering what made them feel that way. When nothing comes to mind, I walk away and admire my new white dress in the mirror.

“Such a pretty linen,” I say, fingers running along the skirt's soft fabric. Eyes narrow, I study my reflection waiting for my face to mimic those I've envied so much. No matter how long I stare though, I know it'll never come. Daddy says I'm not made that way. But what does he know? He's a drunk and I despise him with all of my soul.

“Vivian!” he shouts from the other room, making me jump and back out of the room. He has no idea what's coming as his heavy footsteps come closer to where I'm hidden. “Vivian, where are you?”

Holding my breath, I replay all of my practice runs through my mind. How their startled eyes bulged when they saw it was me. How long it took to end it all and how much quicker I am when I want to end their horror swiftly. The problem with daddy is, I don't want it to be swift. Not after what he did to mama.

“Vivian, come here! I have something for you!”

I bet you do.

My eyes follow his stocky frame trudge by, igniting the inferno running through my veins. I hear mama's cries and vow he'll repeat her words to me. I'm certain he's far enough away not to hear me. So I slide from the small space between the bookcases, hatchet in hand. Too many years he's gotten away with it and what he's done to me. It's time for it to end. For him to pay.

“Vivian,” he calls out to me again, “don't make me keep yelling for you or else—”

His words are cut short as I make my first swing. Edge of the blade landing in the center of his shoulders, bringing him to his knees gasping for air. My hands never leave the handle and with one yank, I rip it free from his body. Crimson splatters my dress, but I pay it no mind as I walk around to give him a view of who's doing this to him.

“Viv—ian, why?” He tries to stand but another chop to the shoulder keeps him down. I wonder why he's not jumping up. Maybe the first cut did more damage than I'd expected? Who knows now. Guess I'll find out later when I'm playing the grieving child.

“Why do they always ask that?” I catch a glimpse of my raven tresses in the mirror and make a mental note to chop them off once I'm finally free from his chains.

He's gasping harder now. Hands held up, he asks, “What—does that—mean?”

I shake my head, “Let's not do this now. We both know what happened to those people.”

Daddy's hazel eyes widen. “You?”

The question rips a demented laugh from my throat. Calming down, I reply, “Well, if it wasn't you. Who did you think it was? A ghost?”

He's trembling, shaking his head with tears in his eyes. I want to puke at this little show. We both know he's as damaged as I am. Maybe even more. I'll stop once I'm done with him. Something I can't say about daddy.

“Viv,” he gasps again. “Your mother wouldn't—”

“Wrong thing to say,” I growl as I raise my weapon and bring it down hard across his chest. No one can hear us. We're too far away from the world. That's why he liked the place. Nobody could hear him play his horrid games.

With every whack I take, my ears block out his screams and pleas for me to stop. “Did you stop for mama when she asked you to stop? Did you stop slicing her skin? Did you make it quick?” I'm screeching, but I can't stop myself now. I've come to far to let him live.

“Vivian, stop!”

He's on his back now and my pretty white dress has a river of scarlet splattered over its darling ruffles. Catching the sight from the corner of my eye, I adjust my hits to land swifter and harder to add to the portrait I am creating.

The screams have stopped. I'm sure he's gone, so I step back to prepare for my greatest act when his hand comes up and lands on the bottom of my dress. Our eyes lock and I watch him fade away.

My face feels odd. My cheeks are tight like I'm clenching my teeth when I'm not. Walking over to the mirror, I can't breathe. For the first time in my life, my face looks like those in mama's pictures. The feelings I am feeling are wonderful. I want to keep feeling them.

I promised I would stop. My eyes never leave my reflection. From where I'm standing I see daddy's tools. Something's written on the box's plaque. Walking to where it sets, it all becomes clear.

Scrawled in elegant gold script, J. Ripper tells me who I am and what I must do. Maybe daddy was right. But who knows now? Guess I'll find out later when I'm playing the grieving child.

The End

So, I hope you enjoyed it and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Until next time, happy reading/writing everyone!
